How to Make a Roblox Game
Updated
Roblox games — Roblox calls them experiences — are made in Roblox Studio, a free app for Windows and Mac. You build the world with parts and models, add behaviour with Luau scripts, test it, and publish it. This guide walks through the whole path for a first game.
Step 1: Install Roblox Studio
Go to create.roblox.com, sign in with your Roblox account and download Roblox Studio. Open it and sign in with the same account.
Step 2: Start From a Template
Create a new experience from a template. Baseplate is an empty world; the game templates come with working mechanics you can play, take apart and learn from.
Step 3: Build the World
Add parts, then move, scale and rotate them into platforms, walls and obstacles. Turn on Anchored for parts that should stay in place. The Toolbox has free models, but look inside them before you use them — some contain scripts you do not want.
Need custom props? Turn a picture into a 3D model with Image to 3D Model, download the FBX and bring it in with File → Import — if it arrives tiny, set Scale Unit to Meters in the import settings.
Step 4: Add Your First Script
Scripts are written in Luau. Code that runs for everyone goes in a Script (for example in ServerScriptService); code for one player’s screen goes in a LocalScript. A classic first script is a part that knocks out anyone who touches it — put this Script inside a Part:
local part = script.Parent
part.Touched:Connect(function(hit)
local humanoid = hit.Parent:FindFirstChildOfClass("Humanoid")
if humanoid then
humanoid.Health = 0
end
end) Step 5: Playtest
Click Play (F5) to try the game as a player and Stop to go back to editing. The Output window shows errors from your scripts. Use the device emulator to check how the game looks on phones and tablets.
Step 6: Add UI, Music and Sound
Menus, shop buttons and HUDs live in a ScreenGui under StarterGui — the Roblox UI Maker makes 9-slice frames for them. For background music and sound effects, see How to Upload Audio to Roblox.
Step 7: Publish Your Game
- 1 In Studio, choose File → Publish to Roblox.
- 2 Enter a name and a description, choose the creator (you or a group) and the devices to support, then click Create.
- 3 The game starts out private: only you and people with edit access can join.
Step 8: Icon, Thumbnails and Going Public
In the Creator Dashboard, open the game and add a 512×512 icon and 1920×1080 thumbnails — make them with the Roblox Game Icon Maker and the Roblox Thumbnail Maker.
To let players in, go to Configure → Settings → Audience, choose Public and save. For players 16 and over you need an age check, an account in good standing that is at least 2 days old, and the content maturity & compliance questionnaire. To reach all ages you also need ID verification (or a parent-linked age check), two-step verification, and either a one-time 1,000 Robux publishing fee — refunded if the game keeps 100 highly engaged players for 60 days — or two consecutive months of Roblox Plus.
Step 9: Earn Robux
Sell passes for permanent perks and developer products for things players buy again. Start with How to Make a Gamepass on Roblox and set prices with the Roblox Tax Calculator.
